Chinese company installs largest turbine in the world

A Chinese company just installed the largest wind turbine in the world. At 18 MW of capacity, this offshore wind turbine has the highest power rating in the world.

It was installed by state-owned power generator manufacturer Dongfang Electric Corporation at a coastal test base in Shantou, in the south of the country.

The turbine’s rotor has a diameter of 260 metres. It is expected to generate enough power to supply 36,000 households.

The strategic development of offshore wind farms is particularly important for China, given the geographic distribution of its energy resources. The eastern and coastal regions of the country have high electricity consumption, while most energy resources are located in the western and northern regions. Offshore wind farms are crucial in balancing this distribution.

In addition, offshore wind power is a key component of China’s broader strategy to achieve significant environmental goals. The country aims to reach its carbon peak by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
